I don't remember how I ran into Vic Chesnutt's music... through a friend, probably. That's the best way. I heard this song - Supernatural - the first time in Pensacola, FL in 1993, I think. It was from Drunk (1993). I immediately went out and bought Is The Actor Happy? (1995) as well.
Those two records changed me as a listener, as a writer and as a person. It's dark stuff. And it's honest stuff. And it's weird stuff. And it knows how to laugh at itself too. He loved words... that was obvious. I got it.
I'm sorry Vic isn't alive anymore. But I bet he's not in pain anymore either.
Here are the lyrics:
supernatural
built a king on compliments
charisma and advertisements
still they see him shimmer ephermeral
it ain't supernatural
or maybe
out of body experience
I flew around the little room once
on intravenous Demerol
it weren't supernatural
sudden smell..certain view
sparks a whoppin case of the deja vu
is it inexplicable
it ain't supernatural
or maybe
