LATE
John Common Nov 2010
I took my sweet time on the day I was born
I was just chillin’ inside, Mom couldn’t take it no more
I was late… yeh, I was late
When I was 7 years old, I’d get to school around noon
I needed a leisurely breakfast and three hours of cartoons
I was late, always
My first job was a joke, I sold Christmas trees
But when I showed up after New Years they did not need me
I was late, do you see?
I’ve never had a girl who was genuinely kind
Only mean girls will put up with my running behind
I’m late, damn straight
CH
Some people sing, some people rhyme
Some people know how to show up on time
That’s not what I do – I’m very delayed …
So I’m tryin’ to make amends with this serenade
V2
I’m no good at catchin’ cabs or buses or trains
I have to travel alone ‘cause I cause my friends pain
Being late … what?
By the time I get up it’s time to go back to bed
I can’t keep nothing straight in my belated head
I’m late, ummm
My breakfast turns to lunch, my lunch turns to dinner
If being late was a sin, I’m the number one sinner
… do you hear me?
When I’m 110 and I’ll probably die slow
I’ll be 112 when I finally go
I’ll be late, even at the end
CH
Some people sing, some people rhyme
Some people know how to show up on time
That’s not what I do – I’m very delayed …
So I’m tryin’ to make amends with this serenade
I’m just passive aggressively, rather impressively
Often obsessively, sometimes depressively
Always excessively… late.
