Its Tuesday morning in Nashville and as we wait for the van to get fixed, I find myself reflecting on yesterday. Waking up in Birmingham, AL held so much for me…waking up in the cradle of the Civil Rights movement; waking up there on the day that we celebrate our country’s independence and an original idea that we could build a country whose development would be informed by all and autonomously governed.
I put out a call on Facebook for songs about Alabama and got no less than 19 replies in one hour…the state and the city hold something for us as a country that in my more privileged and snotty moments I quietly look-down on and in my moments of grace and humility I’m forced into thankfulness for places in our lives and geography that have been willing to hold for us deep struggle and transformation.
A little window into my inner dialogue as we drive over the miles of our country. Enough of that.
We drove from Birmingham to Nashville after fueling up at starbucks…which, like it or not, has been the place on the road we continue to feel simultaneously cool, caffeinated, and fed. Pre-gig in Nashville at The Muse the band hit a place where our motivations and commitment to our music was put on the table…day 5 of tour moves us from a place of honeymoon tour mode into the reality of what we endeavor to do in our world with our art. In the midst of the music industry and our own human capacity, we had to ask, “what compels us forward?” And we knew that the answer is our fierce love. Our fierce love for each other and for those to whom our music speaks. Our fierce love for music, its transformative power in our lives and in the world. And everything else just doesn’t matter. We played our best show yet.
Today we await the van getting fixed – so amazing that we have another day in Nashville to get that done…cross your fingers for us folks, we need this van to continue to carry us. And our show at The Basement tonight is going to be amazing – hoping to see some of you there.
