Man... I do love Saturday mornings. Coffee, morning light, and Bob Ross on public television.
What is it about that guy? Such a shame he's gone... But while he was here, he had that thing man. I suppose it's like anything... If you do something long enough and well enough and with enough passion -- even the smallest task -- it stops being a task and becomes a practice... and then that practice unfolds and eventually you're not really just talking about a goofy cliche painting anymore.
Here are some quotes that I transcribed directly from Bob, just now.
maybe in our world, there lives some little evergreens way back there... when they live far away they don't need much detail, but when they get closer, you need more detail
there are little projections that live everywhere...
if you slop some dark paint on your canvas, don't get upset about it... by the end of the painting it will just look like shadows and make the light places look better.
i really like mountains.
in painting, as things get closer to you, they should get bigger. they're not really bigger, they're just closer to you.
allow it to pick up some of that color
put some shadows down here to make it all come together...
today, let's give these trees a little upward push. sometimes we push downward, sometimes up, depending on the effect we're trying to achieve.
let's get brave... let's put this one right here, looking down at the top of the mountain. this would be the place to live, wouldn't it?
in your painting, you decide how many trees live here. if you have a part of your painting that you're not happy with, remember that trees can cover a multitude of sins.
you're not gonna see it all. you're just gonna see a little bit at a time.
i'm a lazy painter... i look for easy ways to do things.
we put a little black and blue under here... we'll pull it down... look at there, look at there! an instant pond. a happy pond, right there.
