The Time in Which We Lived
copyright 2011 john common
We woke up every morning with poems in our hands.
Creating a new language that we couldn’t understand.
Sleepsurfing the collective, like a freak new model man.
Chasing isolation in a strange and lonely land.
It was the time in which we lived.
We spent most our lives alone.
Most our hearts were broken.
Most our seeds unsown.
We set it like a preference.
It wasn’t written down in stone.
But lost and scared and lonely.
Is only all we've ever known.
Lost and scared and lonely.
Is only all we've ever known.
All our conversation, turned into bad, haiku.
We made stalking a religion -- follow me, I’ll follow you.
Touch, became a memory, electric, boogaloo.
They hacked into our conscience. There was nothing we could do.

Maybe a thousand years from now.
When the computers let us feel.
I will meet you some place different.
Some place real. Some place real. Some place real.

Something Like Beautiful
She could of won oscars for her part
She’s still writing hate mail to my heart
She’s in my mind all alone
I’m a gut shot dog draggin his bone
I need a new word
I need a new word
I need a new word
Something like beautiful
Been living at the bottom a well
And I don’t remember how and when I fell
I think her flesh and bone was just too real for me
But I’ve always preferred invisible things
I need a new word
I need a new word
I need a new word
Something like beautiful
BEAUTIFUL EMPTY by JOHN COMMON & BLINDING FLASHES OF LIGHT
Named a Top 20 AlbumJohn has left us with an amazing array of recordings over the past decade, with his alt-country-folk-rock group Rainville to two solo efforts and now this one with Blinding Flashes of Light that not only showcases John’s voice and songs, but the equally compelling and stunning Jess DiNicola as his vocal partner. You can read more about my thoughts here.

Westword does this thing once a year called Moovers and Shakers. It's a list of... I dunno... people they think are good/cool/worth something? Ask them. But we're on it. And we think it's kinda cool
John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, Beautiful Empty (Self-released).
While John Common has always been a noteworthy songwriter, Beautiful Empty is his finest effort to date. An elegant work of spaciousness, Empty is imbued with discernible pathos and benefits from Common's keen observations, poetic insight and smart arrangements, all of which are brought to life by the exceptional performances of his gifted counterparts and the vocals of Jess DeNicola, which perfectly complement Common's. — Herrera
Boy Trouble
Copyright Dec, 2010
She put on her only dress
And took a cab to the party
The city’s such a wilderness
But you can’t be a shut-in
And when she saw him, she could tell
He knew all the right bands
And she loved the way he smelled
Cloves and leather
So beautiful inside her little world
Life is a fantasy until there’s boy trouble
Boy trouble
Boy trouble
Boy trouble… Ohh
They made out in galleries
She skipped work to see him
He laughed at her salary
But she was always paying
And when he finally disappeared
Did it really matter?
It was nice to have him near
Even in a daydream
So beautiful inside her little world
Life is a fantasy until there’s boy trouble
Boy trouble
Boy trouble
Boy trouble… Ohh
BLINDING FLASHES OF LIGHT
Along with gathering a top-notch band of musicians (collectively, Blinding Flashes of Light), the release of Beautiful Empty in early 2010 signified a major shift for vetaran singer/songwriter John Common. From all appearances, it was a shift in the right direction, resulting in the best year musically of his career. This past year the band played almost every major local festival, including Mile High Music Festival, was listed in Denver Post's Top 20 Underground Bands, and was titled Best Indie/Folk Acoustic Band in this year's Westword Music Showcase. The path continues upward for JC & BFOL in 2011.
THE RIVER IS MOVING
Dec 2010 John Common
Got my hand in my pocket
And my money in my hand
I’m all twisted and folded
‘cause I need to dance
I wouldn’t know beauty
If it kissed my mouth
But the river is moving in me
There’s a pillow full of lonely
And trash in the sink
Come on over baby
Bring me something to drink
The black dog’s on me
I can feel his teeth
But the river is moving in me
Something good’s about to break free
River purify
River purify
River purify
Gonna take me down and testify
My roads lead to bridges
That’ll never be built
My head is flooded
And filled with silt
I wrecked my kingdom
And I don’t even care
But the river is moving in me
Something good’s about to break free
River purify
River purify
River purify
Gonna take me down and testify
this one's for gary
he didn't like my songs
he didn't like my voice
he ended up bailing on us
totally his choice
but when the chips all fall
when the bars all close
when the last girl leaves
this one's for Gary
my verse had no rhythm
and my chorus had no ryhme
all my lyrics were a bummer
and my drummer had no time
but when the van won't start
when the sound man's high
when no one show's up
this one's for Gary
you could say we were a bit loose
I admit we drank a lot
nothing deep or brilliant here
a mediocre flop
I hope he's someplace better
another singer, another band
maybe a solo project
on a pearl white baby grand
but when we botch the middle eight
when they misspell our name
when it's snowing at the load out
this one's for Gary
ON PAPER
december 2011 john common
Figure 1, I disappear
Figure 2, you cut your hair
Figure 3, a souvenir circles back
Figure 4, you don’t care
Figure 5, we lose a year
Figure 6, this love affair is so off track
This is how we draw our lives
On paper you could be exactly what I need
On paper we look good enough to survive
Everything we need to know is here in front of us
On paper
Figure 1, try again
Figure 2, you’re moving in
Figure 3, it’s not a sin to have some doubt
Figure 4, things get real
Figure 5, it’s timeto heal
Figure 6, we got a deal, no more walking out
This is how we draw our lives
On paper you could be exactly what I need
On paper we look good enough to survive
Everything we need to know is here in front of us
On paper
Maybe we’re thinking too much
Maybe all I need is your touch
On paper you could be exactly what I need
On paper we look good enough to survive
Everything we need to know is here in front of us
Everything we need to know is here in front of us
Everything we need to know is here in front of us

MY HEART’S A FIGHTER
Dec 14, 2010
I’ve written a lot of sad songs
I’ll probably write some more
But my heart’s a fighter
Even when it’s on the floor
And though I’m down, right now
Don’t count me out
I’m just a little bit broken
But I’m strong at the core
So put ‘em up buddy
(My heart’s a fighter)
I don’t care if I’m bloody
(My heart’s a fighter)
I used to swing at any target
Aw man, what came to me
When I finally won the title
They all felt the same to me
And though I choose to lose
My muse remains
I’m in it for the long haul
It’s not a game to me
So put ‘em up buddy
(My heart’s a fighter)
I don’t care if I’m bloody
(My heart’s a fighter)
